October Newsletter

Dear colleagues, friends and family,It was a long summer...(Polifemo napping in the shade - Vila de Frades, PT)Summer stretched itself long this year. In Vila de Frades, mornings slowed into books and the kind of heat that pushes you into shade whether you want it or not. Amidst all this laziness, there was also movement, kayaking along the river Coura and the coast of Vila Nova de Milfontes, which turned out to be unexpectedly enjoyable.Back in Amsterdam, the city welcomed me with rare golden days, which fitted perfectly with the street action I joined to support the campaign to rename the Asko Schönberg Ensemble, now Het Muziek.(ijsjes at Negen Straatjes - Amsterdam, NL)Before the summer, my album intro(s) to nowhere was released. If you missed it, you can listen on Bandcamp. As promised, I also shared a bit about my research project (meta)sonic narratives, supported by Fonds Podiumkunsten, on my scribbles section.

This year, I'm diving into two exciting residencies:

- Behind the Wall (with Laura Nygren) -

a 5-day sprint at Het Nest during November Music Festival.

- Attuning to Absence (with Pedro Matias) - a 13-month residency as part of the S+T+ARTS Aqua Motion program, a European-funded initiative focusing on the future of water in Europe.

I also visited Pedro at EKWC this September to run some intra-reactive sonic tests, and I continue exploring peer-to-peer mentoring, sharing my Max/MSP and Ableton skills with friend and collaborator Mathilde Renault.Wishing you an autumn with pumpkins on the table and leaves underfoot,Tatiana

Bica à Boavista (small sample from the total of two truck deliveries at Adega Cooperativa - Vidiguera, PT)Late August marked the end of the first year of transition to organic farming. We harvested the grapes, planted our first trees, and look forward to olive picking and an abundance of oranges and pomegranates this season.

Attuning to AbsenceS+T+ARTS Aqua Motion ResidencyAs of October 1st, we have officially started our 13-month trajectory for the project Attuning to Absence: The Silence Beneath the Crust. Our trajectory began in Terceira (Azores), where we joined all other residents and the Water Innovation Lab partners for the official S+T+ARTS Aqua Motion kickoff. We presented our project alongside others exploring water through art, science and technology. In the middle of the Atlantic, surrounded by volcanic terrain and tidal motion, we shared the first contours of our inquiry into imperceptible ecologies and the poetics of disappearance.Presenting our work in this context allowed us to situate our investigation within a broader conversation about the future of water: its governance, its cultural and symbolic dimensions, and its fragile continuities. And the dialogues that unfolded  have already begun to shape the conceptual and methodological grounding of our practice. From this point, we move into the field phase along the Lima River in northern Portugal, once called the River of Forgetfulness by the Romans, following its course from Galicia to Viana do Castelo. You can follow the project’s development on the S+T+ARTS Aqua Motion platform, where an upcoming interview will share more about our process and collaborations(Presentation at S+T+ARTS Aqua Motion Kickoff - Angra do Heroísmo, PT)

In the crust of my feelingsby Pedro Matias  (recordings at EKWC - Oisterwijk, NL)Last month, I visited Pedro at the European Ceramic Workcentre (EKWC), experimenting with how clay can make sound. The touch and proximity sensors I had previously implemented in the studio with technical specialist Mauricio van der Maesen worked perfectly when applied to the actual sculptures. The pieces now respond to movement and contact exactly as intended, turning gestures into sound and opening up a whole new layer of interaction.I also recorded clay above and below water, capturing the bubbling, crackling, dissolving, and hardening of each stage of its transformation.A highlight of the visit was the classic communal dinners: each of the 16 residents takes a turn cooking for everyone else. It’s a simple ritual, but it brings the group together, and leaves a lasting impression.

Behind the Wall November Music x Het Nest Residency

(Laura Nygren and myself working at Splendor - Amsterdam, NL)I’m very excited to spend November Music in residency with Laura! This will be our first time working together as sound makers, exploring how our musical voices can confront, distort and merge in unexpected ways.

Through exploratory mapping, we are examining internalized patriarchy in relation to silence, vocalization, and how power structures shape artistic expression, including the ways violence against women manifests in society and culture. In this early phase, we are developing a shared artistic and conceptual framework for the opera, drawing on feminist, queer, and crip perspectives as well as experimental and creative methodologies, while building a compositional process that challenges traditional hierarchies.

The outcomes of this research will eventually form a solo opera for singer Elisabeth Hetherington. If you want to check what we previously did together, have a look at the after-movie of I may fall into the sound below:
